Serenity Prayer

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,

This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

...Dedicated to the fitness of the soul. We start first in God's House,  a Holy Place that is in our own indwelling. We are the church so let's take a moment to learn about historical sites that remind us of the rich heritage of the church's earliest public places of worship.

Tsere HaraTika and Lalibela are two places of worship in Ethiopia. Coptic Christians enjoy a rich heritage seen in their distinct crosses, architecture and artwork. The iconic halo surrounding the figures in paintings dates back to 4th century. In the ancient city of Axum, Ethiopian King Ezna II printed crosses on the coins of the country as a result of his Christian conversion. The patron saint Phillip is greatly revered for his interaction with an attendant of Queen Candace's court that also aided in the founding of Ethiopia's earliest church.

What is a Chakra?
F

The word Chakra in Sankskrit means "wheel." It's used as a metaphor to represent a space that holds energy. There are seven chakras within the human body, each with its own connection to different parts of the body. For example, the heart chakra relates to the circulatory system and other heart functions.

From the cartoon Avatar, an episode entitled, "Clenasing the Chakras,: speaks to the fears, guilt, grif, shame and other blockers, preventing the flow of energy throughout the body. The clip defines chakras and presents an entertaining understanding of its function.

Aang, the main character featured in the clip is guided by a guru who advises him, teaching him how to master his weaknesses by opening his chakras for him to fulfill his destiny. His words of wisdom spell out the definition of chakras and outlines the blockers that hinder energy flow. Not solely for physical performance, the cleaning of chakras portayed suggests that in cleansing chakras, there's a clearing of the mind as well as the body.

Chakras traditionally have been assigned to specific attributes, colors, foods, spices, essential oils and gems. Color therapy and aromatherapy play a part in the culminating field of Chakra therapy. The idea is that by being aware of these wheels of energy, there's a consorted effort to heal ailments, to strengthen weakened parts of our body and m ind.

From a Coptic perspective, I'm immediately drawn to Ezekiel 1:16 which describes Yahweh as a wheel in the middle of a wheel. Also described as a "fire" shut in my bones, Yahweh or the Holy Spirit is the energy that flows within believers. What grieves the Holy Spirit would be synonymous with what blocks the flow of energy.

The common thread between Chakras described from an Eastern perspective and Christianity is that chakra therapy prescribes sounds, chants and mantras for healing, just as there's healing in worship through song .  Another common thread is the the value of love, how it's recognized in both perspectives as a powerful force. Lastly, the letting go of attachments, to allow cosmic energy to flow, this is the same concept behind monastism, in which a person sacrifices all of their possessions to pursue a simplified life separated and dedicated for spiritual work.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

Beading &  Meditation

Ever notice how quiet it gets when Beading?

hosting beading events at the studio, I have the fortune of seeing participants lose themselves in their work. At first, everyone is chatty, enjoying each other's conversation then after while, there's nothing but silence as each person starts on their own journey. Beading is meditative and while having the intention of creating a masterpiece, the gift of meditation occurs. Download, A sample handout on the history of waistbeading. .

The Sutras of Patanjali

A collection of writings written by, Patanjali, a pioneer of Yoga, the sutras are divided into four books. Book 1 defines yoga, Book 2 outlines the 8 limbs of yoga (Ashtonga), Book 3 illustrates the benefits of Yoga and Book 4 encourages humililty recognizing the never ending journey of learning.
In the field of medicine, a sutra is what is used to staple tissue or muscle together in order for the healing process to begin. Just as a sutra binds together what's been damaged or broken apart, so does the sutra in the yoga world bring together all that's beneficial,  binding in words of wisdom for our emotional and spiritual healing. When dissected the term "sutra"means "Su" or Good and "Tra" meaning Tool. Altogether a sutra is a good tool also known as tool to weave.

There are 196 of Patanjali's sutras. I've chosen 6 that speak to the yogi spiritually, that are God centered and endorses living by faith.

God Centered Sutras

2.45

1.25

1.27

Refer to God in a way, most apprpriate to the qualities of God.
Reverence to God promotes the ability to completely undertand any object of choice.
God knows everything there is to be known.

1.24

1.26

1.28

God is the Supreme Being whose actions are never based on misapprehension.
God is eternal. In fact, he is the ultimate teacher. He is the source of guidance for all teachers: past, present, and future.
In order to relate to God it is necessary to regularly address him properly and reflect on his qualities.

Spiritual Food

There are 31,173 verses in the Bible. Here are six. To meditate on God's word, this is the substance of meditation.

Ezekiel 36:26

Zechariah 4:6

1Corinthians 1:27

I will give you a new heart and a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a tender heart.
Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith The Lord of Hosts.
...but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame that which is strong.

John 15:16

Psalm 94:18-19

Haggai 2:8-9

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit- fruit that will last.
When I said, "my foot is slipping," your love, O Lord supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.
The silver is mine the gold is mine declares The Lord Almight. The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house, says The Lord Almight. And in this place I will grant peace, declares The Lord Almighty.
